Born and raised in Alpena, Michigan, Greg Reeves wrote his first book in the third grade. After attending Alpena Community College, he earned awards in sports journalism and attended creative writing courses.

Transferring to Central Michigan University after receiving an Associate's Degree, Reeves continued classes in English, creative writing, and history. Admitted to the university's graduate school, he was awarded his Master's Degree in Literature in 1985.
