Mike Higgins's Bio

Michael P. Higgins has been a Science Fiction fan since the days of the pulp magazines in the 50’s. Weaned on the ACE doubles and ANALOG, he grew up familiar with the work of the giants in the field, from Heinlein to Clarke to Philip K. Dick. Oddly enough it wasn’t until very much later in life that he was bitten with the ambition to write similar genre fiction himself.

Up to that point he had spent his time growing up in Yonkers, meeting and wedding the love of his life, Nancy Vazquez, and fathering two children. He supported his family and himself by working in the construction field, primarily as an electrician in New York City. He also attended night school, attaining a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York (SUNY), during which period he founded and edited the College Newsletter at the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies.

He taught for several years in adult education, his interests ranging from working with High School Dropouts seeking an equivalency diploma to teaching Electrical Installation and Practice to establishing and teaching a Computer Literacy course for adult workers in the electrical industry. During that period he also edited two separate community newspapers in his cooperative housing development in Queens, New York.

A Freemason, Higgins was appointed Grand Director of Ceremonies in the Grand Lodge of the State of New York for a two year term, and has subsequently remained active in the Grand Lodge.

Higgins’ interest in Science Fiction has remained constant throughout his life and, finally, he took pen in hand (actually, sat down at the keyboard) and took a shot at it, always keeping in mind the old adage that times change, but people don’t.

Origami Rose is the result. He hopes you think it worth the trip.
